Raising the Roof on Sustainability : EVCC™ Pedas RSA Powers Ahead with 1.8MWp Solar Canopy

As Malaysia accelerates its transition to low-carbon infrastructure, EVCC™ Pedas RSA aspire to sets a new benchmark with the integration of a 1.8 megawatt-peak (MWp) Building-Integrated Photovoltaic (BIPV) system — positioned as a central ESG component of the first privately developed Platinum-rated GreenRE Rest Service Area (RSA) along the PLUS Expressway.

This solar infrastructure is not a secondary feature — it is a core energy strategy designed to enhance system efficiency, reduce emissions, and enable long-term operational resilience across the development.

Integrated Bi-Facial Technology for Enhanced Yield and Daylighting

The BIPV system utilizes bi-facial photovoltaic modules that capture solar irradiance from both sides, increasing overall energy yield while allowing filtered daylight to penetrate public circulation areas below.

This configuration not only supports energy generation, but also optimizes daylighting, reducing the need for artificial lighting during operational hours.

System performance advantages include:

  • Increased total kWh output via albedo reflection and rear-side absorption

  • Daylighting benefits for shaded communal areas

  • Optimized space utilization via integrated rooftop architecture

The canopy is structurally engineered to accommodate the solar modules while maintaining open airflow and pedestrian visibility — aligning architectural intent with environmental function.

Technical System Overview

The BIPV system includes:

  • Grid-synchronized inverters sized for future energy demand

  • Zero export metering for compliance with SELCO regulations

  • Full Balance-of-System (BOS) infrastructure and cabling

The design allows for compatibility with on-site EV fast chargers, tenant loads, and potential energy storage systems in future expansion phases.

Strategic ESG Integration

As part of EVCC’s broader roadmap to develop ESG-aligned, investor-grade highway infrastructure, the BIPV system at Pedas RSA serves multiple roles:

  • Reduces Scope 2 emissions by offsetting daytime grid reliance

  • Lowers peak demand charges, improving long-term OPEX performance

  • Qualifies the project for sustainability-linked investment instruments

  • Demonstrates commitment to measurable ESG outcomes, aligning with institutional benchmarks

Future-Proofed Roadside Infrastructure

The implementation of this 1.8MWp BIPV system underscores EVCC™ Pedas RSA’s positioning as a scalable EV and ESG hub. Its integration within the main canopy reflects a data-driven approach to design — where every structural surface serves an operational purpose.

As additional RSAs are rolled out under the EVCC™ brand, the solar BIPV model introduced at Pedas will act as the performance baseline for energy-efficient roadside development in Malaysia.
