At EVCC™ Pedas RSA, the future of highway rest stops takes shape not only in its technology and amenities — but in the way architecture works harder and smarter. Central to this is a visual and structural masterpiece: a series of slender monolithic columns that define the elliptical building’s silhouette.
Minimalist in profile yet monumental in purpose, these columns are not merely support structures. They are multi-functional design elements — carrying loads, channeling rainwater, and elevating the visitor experience through spatial rhythm and architectural grace.
Precision-Crafted, Sculpturally Executed
Each column is 450mm in diameter, with the tallest reaching an impressive 19 meters in height. Cast monolithically, the columns are formed in a single concrete pour to achieve a clean, joint-free finish — a method that reflects both advanced engineering and minimalist design philosophy.
Their slenderness ratio and soaring verticality offer a striking visual contrast to the elliptical mass of the main building, introducing lightness and rhythm to the structure. At every angle — whether viewed from the concourse below or from the first-floor retail deck — they frame the space with elegance.
Not Just Strong — Smart
Beyond their sculptural appeal, these columns are designed with functional intelligence. Each one serves as a concealed rainwater downpipe, integrating seamlessly into the RSA’s rainwater harvesting system.
Roof runoff is funneled through the hollow core of the columns directly into an underground collection system — eliminating the need for exposed gutters or external piping. This approach reduces visual clutter while supporting EVCC’s green building strategy, conserving water for landscape irrigation and other non-potable uses.
Climate-Responsive Spatial Design
The columns are also strategically spaced to allow for cross-ventilation and filtered daylight, contributing to the open-air concourse’s passive cooling performance. Together with the raised elliptical roof, they create shaded breezeways and visually comfortable zones — ideal for EV users waiting, dining, or simply enjoying a moment of rest.
This passive climate strategy not only enhances user comfort, but reduces reliance on mechanical ventilation, furthering the building’s energy-efficient credentials.
An Architectural Language of Confidence and Calm
Symbolically, the repeating vertical rhythm of the columns conveys stability, order, and openness. Like tree trunks in a curated grove, they invite movement between light and shadow, and subtly guide visitors through the site.
At sunrise or sunset, the columns cast long, elegant silhouettes that animate the plaza — turning a functional space into a sculptural urban stage. These columns don’t just hold up the roof — they hold up a vision of what the future of infrastructure can look like.
