Malaysia’s expressway infrastructure is undergoing a quiet revolution.
Gone are the days when rest stops and toll booths operated in isolation from driver behaviour and traffic dynamics. Today, Lembaga Lebuhraya Malaysia (LLM) and PLUS Malaysia Berhad are charting a bold course to transform the country’s highways into an intelligent mobility network — powered by data, AI, and cloud connectivity.
At the heart of this transition lies a new generation of digitally integrated rest areas — and EVCC™ Pedas RSA is leading the charge as Malaysia’s first private-sector Rest and Service Area built from the ground up for the age of smart expressways.
From Asphalt to Algorithms: The Evolution of Expressways
Over the past five years, LLM has evolved beyond its regulatory role into a mobility-enabling agency, while PLUS — Malaysia’s largest highway operator — has become a frontrunner in digitalising road infrastructure.
The shift is anchored by several landmark initiatives:
Barrier-Free Tolling with RFID and ANPR
All PLUS toll plazas now support RFID lanes, backed by Automated Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) systems to verify vehicle identity.
Advanced ANPR platforms (such as Tapway VehicleTrack) use AI and NVIDIA GPUs to classify car type, plate, and colour within milliseconds — even in poor lighting.
This technology lays the foundation for Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) tolling, which LLM plans to implement nationwide by 2025 — eliminating traditional toll booths altogether.
PLUSMiles App and AI-Driven Travel Tools
The PLUSMiles app now integrates real-time traffic feeds, CCTV visuals, toll calculators, and R&R locators into one seamless platform.
PLUS’s AI-powered chatbot PUTRI manages over 200,000 customer interactions annually, offering SOS functions, lane closure updates, and direct support via WhatsApp.
The app is cloud-hosted (via Microsoft Azure), enabling robust data sharing, scalability, and cross-platform integration.
Real-Time Data Collaboration with Waze & Google
LLM’s Smart Highway Blueprint officially recognises Waze and Google Maps as partners, feeding real-time congestion and incident data into national Traffic Management Centres (TMCs).
PLUS’s own geospatial command centre uses ArcGIS dashboards to visualise traffic patterns, forecast travel times, and detect emergencies — including suicide risks on bridges.
Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) & National TMC
Both LLM and PLUS operate 24/7 Traffic Management Centres that consolidate data from 1,000+ CCTV feeds, variable message signs (VMS), ANPR gantries, and Waze alerts.
These systems provide proactive traffic control, accident response, and live travel information to media, apps, and highway signage.
EVCC™ Pedas RSA: Built for the Digital Highway Era
Located at KM241 (Southbound) on the PLUS Expressway, EVCC™ Pedas RSA is not just a modern rest stop — it’s an intelligent infrastructure node designed to fully integrate with LLM’s and PLUS’s digital ecosystem.
Key Smart Features of EVCC™ Pedas RSA:
Feature | Integration | Value to Highway Users |
ANPR-Capabilities | Analyse ANPR data stream | Enables traffic prediction |
EV Charger Load Analytics | Real-time monitoring of Tesla & Gentari chargers | Optimises queuing and power balancing during peaks |
Smart Parking Systems | AI-managed traffic flow and space occupancy | Minimises congestion and improves turnover rate |
POS-Linked Retail Insights | Integrated with loyalty platforms | Enables location-based rewards, offers, and data-driven leasing |
Waze Data Sync | Pushes charger availability & crowd levels | Informs driver decisions en route |
IoT Environmental Sensors | ESG-linked monitoring (solar, water, waste) | Supports LLM’s Green Highway metrics and live ESG reporting |
LLM and PLUS are not just upgrading toll plazas or resurfacing roads — they are reimagining the expressway as a real-time data network. EVCC™ Pedas RSA is proud to be the first private-sector RSA designed from inception to be an intelligent node on this evolving system.
As Malaysia’s transport ecosystem embraces mobility-as-a-service, EV integration, and smart city frameworks, EVCC™ will help deliver on the promise of safer, cleaner, more informed highway journeys — for every driver, every day.
