The architectural and ESG aspirations of EVCC™ Pedas RSA rest—both symbolically and structurally—on a meticulously engineered steel superstructure. Designed to anchor one of Malaysia’s most advanced bifacial solar canopies, the circular roof of the RSA is not merely an aesthetic gesture but a critical infrastructure component supporting the project’s renewable energy and sustainability agenda.

To meet the complex requirements of this system, EVCC™ engaged Ironwill Metal Engineering Sdn Bhd, a specialist in structural steel fabrication and erection with over 28 years of experience delivering high-tolerance steelworks across commercial, industrial, and infrastructure sectors.

Engineering Scope and Structural Integration

Ironwill was commissioned to fabricate and erect the main roof superstructure, which spans the central RSA building. This structure not only supports a 1.8MWp bifacial photovoltaic array but also serves as a primary load-bearing system for the building envelope.

The engineering brief required a system capable of:

  • Supporting both dead loads and dynamic wind uplift pressures associated with elevated solar PV installations

  • Ensuring dimensional compatibility

  • Complying with Platinum Rated GreenRE certification requirements, including daylight penetration, thermal performance, and lifecycle efficiency

Ironwill’s solution involved custom-fabricated steel members produced to precise specifications, pre-assembled where feasible to reduce site works, and installed with tight tolerances to align with solar orientation and roof geometry.

Their team worked in close coordination with the civil, M&E, and solar contractors to ensure clean interface points and sequencing alignment—minimising rework and reducing risk across the construction programme.

Contractor Profile: A Proven Structural Specialist

Established in 1996, Ironwill Metal Engineering has long been recognised for its ability to execute technically complex steel erection works. The firm has a depth of experience in delivering structural frameworks for commercial and energy projects requiring coordination with multi-disciplinary systems and tight programme adherence.

What differentiates Ironwill in this segment is its combination of hands-on project planning, in-house production control, and on-site execution discipline—a blend of capabilities that proved vital in a project where engineering performance and ESG certification were tightly coupled.

Structural Foundation for Sustainable Mobility

The superstructure at EVCC™ Pedas RSA is foundational to more than just the building—it enables a broader ESG vision encompassing renewable energy generation, low-carbon design, and long-term operational efficiency. Without a precisely engineered structural system, the site’s solar capacity, rainwater harvesting features, and EV charging infrastructure could not be integrated with the architectural and operational requirements.

By delivering a structure that meets high-performance benchmarks in both form and function, Ironwill has played a pivotal role in realising Malaysia’s first ESG-driven private Rest Service Area—positioned strategically along the PLUS Expressway to support the country’s electric mobility transition.

EVCC™ and its partners remain committed to setting new standards in roadside development, where engineering quality is not compromised but elevated to meet the demands of a decarbonising future.
