The New Reality: From Four Lanes to Six in Johor
As part of Malaysia’s strategic highway upgrading plan, PLUS Malaysia Berhad has commenced the widening of the North-South Expressway (NSE) between Senai Utara and Sedenak. This 22-km stretch—one of the NSE’s busiest and most congested segments—will be expanded from four lanes (2+2) to six lanes (3+3) to accommodate rising traffic volume from Johor Bahru, Kulai, and cross-border traffic from Singapore.
Segment | Length | Scope | Status |
Senai Utara → Sedenak | 22 km | 6-lane carriageway (3+3) | Construction started mid-2024; 80% of SB lanes completed as of Q2 2025; full completion by early 2028 |
This segment is part of a broader multi-phase RM 2.19 billion PLUS highway widening initiative, which also includes:
Kulai → Senai Utara
Yong Peng (North) → Senai (North) (newly awarded to WCT Holdings)
Sedenak → Simpang Renggam
Simpang Renggam → Machap (proposed phase)
What Six Lanes Mean for Traffic Flow
Metric | Before (4 lanes) | After (6 lanes) | Improvement |
Peak-hour speed | 35–45 km/h | 80–95 km/h | +120% |
Hourly vehicle capacity | ~4,000 veh/hr | ~6,000 veh/hr | +50% |
Holiday congestion | 20–25 km backups | ≤ 5 km (modelled) | ~75% relief |
KL–JB travel time | 4.5–5 hrs | 3–3.5 hrs | Up to 90 mins saved |
The Senai Utara–Sedenak section is a gateway into Johor Bahru and a choke-point for both local and Singapore-bound traffic. The six-lane expansion will vastly improve journey reliability, benefitting passenger vehicles, tour buses, cargo fleets, and emergency services.
Why This Directly Elevates EVCC™ Pedas RSA
Located at KM 241 Southbound, EVCC™ Pedas RSA is the first major full-service RSA after Seremban, making it a key stopping point as traffic flows more freely along the widened expressway.
Key Positives:
Feature | Impact Post-Expansion |
Improved journey speed | Drivers more likely to plan one quality stop - Pedas RSA becomes the natural choice |
Higher vehicle throughput | More vehicles = more potential users of fuel, food, and EV charging facilities |
Long-haul predictability | EVs, buses, and hauliers can confidently schedule stops at Pedas RSA based on accurate travel timing |
Built to Serve the Future of Travel
EVCC™ Pedas RSA offers a new benchmark for RSA design:
24 high-power charging bays (12 Tesla, 12 Gentari, up to 350 kW)
Anchors include McDonald’s, Tealive, Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, Rotiboy, Dunkin’, MR. DIY
Green building: 5 MVA substation, solar-ready roof, rainwater harvesting
Conclusion: Infrastructure + Operations = Resilience
The Senai Utara–Sedenak six-lane expansion is more than just asphalt—it is a catalyst for unlocking the southern region’s full traffic and logistics potential. With traffic flowing faster and heavier, EVCC™ Pedas RSA is perfectly placed to serve as the highway’s “smart pit stop”—catering to:
Leisure travellers
Singaporean EV drivers
Fleet operators
Bus and tour groups
Local and regional small businesses
